Not Exactlyknowing when the temple was built, but according to historical records state that Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple built for workshipping the Gods, especially the god Vishnu on command of Rishi Markandeya. Rishi Markandeya was a Maharishi or Hindu religion teacher and disseminator from Java Island. Judging from the first who build this temple can be expected that the Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple built in vulnerable time between 1300AD to 1500AD because Maharishi Markandeya derived from Majapahit Kingdom that rule back then Indonesian archipelago then Bali island is one of the colony.
About the Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple
Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple means “Gunung = Mount” and “Kawi = resemble” and Sebatu which refers to the name of the village where the temple is built. Sebatu itself means “stone / rock”. This temple categorized “Dhang Kahyangan” where all Hindus in Bali should worship here because the temples in Bali has different categories such as temple only be used by one clan, caste, or by villagers and so on. so those who worship at the temple is not only coming from Sebatu village but all of Hindus in Bali. in addition to worship, this temple also contained some holy water fount where people use it to “melukat” or a bath of purification due to it is believed if the “melukat” in this shower will be blessed by the gods.

There is a large pool in the temple courtyard where the pool is filled by hundreds of koi with various types and sizes as well as thousands of other small fish that swim around the pond graced with beautiful colors. There is a food vendor booths fish on this side of the pond, you can buy it and feed these beautiful fishes. the price of fish food is not expensive, only IDR.5,000 or about half US dollar to 500 Gram. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to catch the fish in this pond because they are is sacred.
There are three parts of the temple which is the main temple, the congregation where this place of worship. the day that this temple will be many congregations usually in the Balinese Hindu religious scriptures like the full moon, Galungan, Kuningan and other holidays for Hinduism in Bali. On the left side out of the main temple and there is a holy water fount, Here in place for those who truly want to cleanse themselves. on the left inside of the main temple there is a spring-shaped pool, in the middle there is a temple / monument. this is the most sacred water in this temple. if you are allowed to touch the water in the pool or even in the fountain so unfortunately this the water in the spring is being forbidden to touch , only priests are allowed to take the water.
Public / Tourist Facilities
in the middle of the yard in outside of the main temple, there is an open hall which is usually used by the Sebatu villagers to held meeting which discussed about the village, the farm and the temple it self. you can use it to take a rest after a weary sort roam Gunung Kawi temple. There are also toilets around the corner.
And Oh…, I do not want to forget
There is a public pool on the right side of the temple which is commonly used by villagers and tourists, unfortunately I can not take a picture inside the pool because it is forbidden to get in the camera. but as I look, public pool can be quite wide with water sourced from the main temple in a public pool so water is really clean like crystal clear.
